Hammond Lead Products, a division of the Hammond Group Inc., traces its beginning to 1915. Two brothers, William and Erwin Wilke, both engineering graduates, pioneered the production of specification secondary lead together with their father, a chemical and mechanical engineer.
Close cooperation was developed with lead-acid battery companies through the production of lead metal alloys and lead oxides. This cooperation led to the building of a large secondary smelter and lead oxide plant in 1920. From its inception, this firm, Metals Refining Company, was known as a supplier of high quality metals and lead chemicals and was one of the largest secondary lead smelters in the country. Hammond Lead Products was organized 10 years later in 1930 with William as president.

With it's foundation firmly planted, HLP was now set to grow. The initial production of red lead and litharge grew to the development of lead silicates, carbonates and sulfates; these products were offered to the industry in a variety of particle sizes, treatments and packages.
While widening their product lines, HLP also developed the means to produce an (UHP) ultra-high purity (up to 99.99%) product; this was initially developed to satisfy the needs of the optical industry and emerging fiber optic markets; in time, this product specification was applied to other products HLP manufactured in response to industry needs and demands.
In addition to making pioneering advancements in lead chemicals development and analysis, HLP also pioneered the development and use of HEPA filter technology to control process emissions. Not only did this technology reduce process emissions and dramatically lower ambient air levels in the plant, but it also allowed the captured emissions to be reworked through the process. The HEPA technology set the standard for the industry, and is still in use today in the HLP facility. The success of the HEPA filtration system eventually made the way into the consumer marketplace where it's finding an ever-widening range of applications.
